🐆 Biodiversity & Conservation Biology

Biodiversity encompasses the totality of genes, species, and ecosystems across the planetary biosphere. Conservation biology deploys quantitative ecological strategies to halt anthropogenic species extinction.

1. 📐 Patterns of Biodiversity & Alexander von Humboldt's Species-Area Relationship

  Species Richness (S)

      │ /────────── Rectangular Hyperbola: S = C A^z
      │ /
      │ /
      │ / /──────────── Log-Log Linearized: log S = log C + z log A (Slope = z)
      │ / /
      │ / /
      └─/───/────────────────────► Area (A)
  • S = Species richness.
  • A = Area surveyed.
  • C = Y-intercept constant.
  • z = Slope of the regression line (Regression Coefficient).
    • For small standard regional areas: z=0.10.2 (regardless of taxonomic group or region).
    • For entire continents / very large areas: z=0.61.2 (e.g., Frugivorous birds and mammals in tropical forests of continents: z=1.15).

2. 🪓 The "Evil Quartet" (Drivers of Anthropogenic Extinction)

Memory Mnemonic: HOCOHabitat Loss, Over-exploitation, Co-extinctions, Alien Invasions
  1. Habitat Loss & Fragmentation: Most catastrophic threat (e.g., Tropical rainforests reduced from 14% to <6% of Earth's land; Amazon rainforest cleared for soybean cultivation and beef cattle ranching).
  2. Over-Exploitation: Humans hunting past sustainable replacement yields (e.g., Extinction of Steller's Sea Cow, Passenger Pigeon).
  3. Alien Species Invasions: Introduced exotic species outcompeting natives (e.g., Nile Perch introduced into Lake Victoria caused extinction of >200 endemic Cichlid fish species; Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia), Parthenium (Carrot grass), Lantana, African catfish Clarias gariepinus threatening indigenous catfishes).
  4. Co-Extinctions: Obligate mutualist partner goes extinct when host species perishes (e.g., Co-evolved plant-pollinator mutualism, host-specific parasites).

3. 🛡️ In-Situ vs Ex-Situ Conservation Strategies
