Human reproduction is viviparous and sexual, characterized by specialized gametogenesis, synchronized hormonal ovarian-uterine menstrual cycles, internal fertilization, and placental embryogenesis.

  1. Menstrual Phase (Days 1–5): Breakdown of the endometrial functional layer and uterine blood vessels due to abrupt withdrawal of progesterone upon degeneration of corpus luteum.
  2. Follicular / Proliferative Phase (Days 6–13): Pituitary FSH stimulates primary follicles to mature into Graafian follicles; follicular theca cells secrete Estrogen, stimulating endometrial re-growth.
  3. Ovulatory Phase (Day 14): Peak estrogen triggers positive feedback rapid surge of pituitary LH (LH Surge), inducing rupture of Graafian follicle and release of secondary oocyte (Ovulation).
  4. Luteal / Secretory Phase (Days 15–28): Ruptured Graafian follicle transforms into endocrine Corpus Luteum, which secretes large amounts of Progesterone to maintain endometrial thickness for implantation. If fertilization does not occur, corpus luteum degenerates into Corpus Albicans.

3. ⚡ Fertilization, Cleavage & Implantation

  1. Capacitation: Uterine secretions destabilize the sperm head membrane and wash away cholesterol coats.
  2. Acrosome Reaction: Sperm releases Hyaluronidase and Acrosin (Zona lysin), digesting the Corona Radiata and Zona Pellucida.
  3. Cortical Reaction & Polyspermy Block: Sperm fusion depolarizes the oolemma (fast electrical block) and triggers cortical granule exocytosis, hardening the zona pellucida (slow permanent block to polyspermy).

  5. Implantation: Occurs on Day 7 post-fertilization as the trophoblast embeds into the maternal endometrium. Trophoblast secretes human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG), which rescues the corpus luteum and sustains progesterone production throughout early pregnancy.
