🌺 Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants

Angiosperms reproduce sexually through specialized floral organs, achieving genetic recombination through targeted pollen delivery, double fertilization, and post-zygotic embryo-seed development.

1. 🌾 Microsporogenesis & Pollen Grain Ultrastructure

ANTHER WALL LAYERS (OUTER TO INNER)
Epidermis (Protective) ──► Endothecium (Fibrous alpha-cellulose thickenings: Dehiscence)

Middle Layers (1-3 Ephemeral) ──► Tapetum (Dense cytoplasm, polyploid; secretes Pollenkit & Sporopollenin)

1.1 The Microspore / Pollen Grain

  • Exine: Outer hard layer composed of Sporopollenin (most resistant organic material known; resists strong acids, alkalis, high temperature, and enzymatic digestion). Germ pores are apertures where sporopollenin is absent.
  • Intine: Inner thin continuous pectocellulosic wall.
  • Microgametophyte: 2-celled stage in >60% angiosperms (Large Vegetative Cell + Small spindle-shaped Generative Cell).

2. 🌸 Megasporogenesis & The Monosporic Polygonum Embryo Sac

Megaspore Mother Cell (MMC, 2n) ──[Meiosis]──► Linear Tetrad of Megaspores (n)

                                                        ▼ [3 Degenerate; 1 Functional Megaspore]
  Functional Megaspore (n) ──[3 Sequential Free-Nuclear Mitotic Divisions]──► 8 Nuclei

                                                        ▼ [Cellularization]
Mature 7-Celled, 8-Nucleate Embryo Sac (Polygonum Type)
                     7-CELLED, 8-NUCLEATE EMBRYO SAC
                             [CHALAZAL END]
                        3 Antipodal Cells (n each)

                   Central Cell (2 Polar Nuclei: n + n)

Egg Apparatus: 2 Synergids with Filiform Apparatus + 1 Egg Cell (n)
                             [MICROPYLAR END]

3. ⚡ Double Fertilization & Triple Fusion (S.G. Nawaschin, 1898)

Unique defining hallmark of angiosperms:

Pollen Tube delivers 2 Male Gametes into Synergid via Filiform Apparatus
  1. Syngamy (True Fertilization):Male Gamete (n)+Egg Cell (n)Diploid Zygote (2n)Embryo
  2. Triple Fusion:Male Gamete (n)+2 Polar Nuclei (n+n)Primary Endosperm Nucleus (PEN, 3n)Endosperm
Total Fertilization Events=Syngamy+Triple Fusion=Double Fertilization(5 Nuclei Total Involved)

4. 🌱 Endosperm Development & Apomixis

  1. Free-Nuclear Endosperm: PEN undergoes repeated free-nuclear divisions without cytokinesis (e.g., tender coconut liquid water is free-nuclear endosperm; surrounding white kernel is cellular endosperm).
  2. Apomixis: A form of asexual reproduction that mimics sexual reproduction, producing seeds without fertilization (e.g., Asteraceae and grasses).
  3. Polyembryony: Occurrence of more than one embryo in a seed (e.g., Citrus, Mango: nucellar cells protrude into embryo sac and develop into multiple embryos).
